Sharon Carson

Sharon Carson has been painting for more than 30 years.   Her paintings have been accepted into several juried national shows including those sponsored by The Salmagundi Club, Academic Artists, Knickerbocker Artists, Hudson Valley Artists, the National Academy of Design, and Southern Vermont Arts Center.

Sharon’s work has been included in invitational or juried exhibitions at Canton Art Institute in Canton, Ohio; Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, Massachusetts; The Copley Society of Boston; the Art Association of Old Lyme in Connecticut; Attleboro Museum;  Symphony Hall in Boston; Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts;  Boston Design Center; The Federal Reserve Bank in Boston, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Art Association, and Southern Vermont Arts Center.

Sharon was selected for an artist residency program sponsored by Les Amis de la Grande Vigne in Dinan, France and one of her paintings is now included in the museum’s permanent collection.  In 1989 Sharon was featured in the November issue of  “American Artist” magazine.

Her current work is based on the Berkshire landscape, focusing on the colors, rhythms and shapes found in nature, emphasizing personal creativity over realism.  Each painting begins with an outdoor sketch where Sharon gathers ideas about the subject, using nature as reference.  Working from those sketches, she creates the final painting in her studio.

Sharon is the curator for the North Adams Regional Hospital’s Community Art Program.  Since moving to North Adams in 2004, Sharon has been continually involved with the Berkshire art community.  She and her husband Ed live in Eclipse Mill Artist Lofts, a renovated textile mill that is now live/work space for artists. Sharon has frequently exhibited her artwork in the Eclipse Mill Gallery as well as worked with other Eclipse Mill artists to plan and promote the in-house gallery exhibitions.  She has also coordinated several guided art tours and media visits to the mill.  In 2007 Sharon chaired the North Adams Open Studios committee.  The October event drew more than 1,200 visitors to see art by nearly 100 artists at 20 downtown sites.  Sharon received a North Adams Community Achievement Award for her work with North Adams Open Studios and in 2009 the Massachusetts Cultural Council awarded North Adams Open Studios its Gold Star Project distinction.  During the summer of 2008, Sharon was an artist member of the North Adams Artists’ Cooperative Gallery, part of the first annual Downstreet Art project.
